  • Elevator Hot Wiring

Today was another day in my life that I was thankful for having an engineering mind.

To give those of you that don’t have any idea the layout of my apt and accompanying elevator, I’ll now go into that.  Aaron and I have a private elevator that goes from the garage to our floor (the fourth), with an intermediate stop at the second floor, where the building patio is at.  The elevator is key controlled, so no one can just come up and visit us.  Now, for some reason, it never dawned on me why people couldn’t do this from the patio.  This is the story about how the “dawning” occurred.

This morning, Erin and I went down to the patio via the elevator to enjoy the nice day with a cup of tea.  While we were outside, enjoying the beautiful weather, Aaron and Jen left to some party, via the elevator.  After enjoying the outdoors for an hour or so, unplugging the fish pond pump, and playing with a neighbors new puppy, we decided to head back up.

    Clink Clink

That’s the sound of the elevator door not opening.  At the time, we didn’t know that Aaron and Jen had left.  No big deal, we’ll just push the button and wait for the elevator.  Pushing the button didn’t do anything.  There wasn’t a key in this panel, and it was set to off.  Well, we couldn’t call the elevator, and neither of us had keys, phone, or shoes.  Great, just great.

So, we go sit back on the porch, realizing that we were locked out, and without shoes, we couldn’t even go for a walk anywhere.  We had the windows open last night, so both of us started thinking of way we could get to the open windows.  Granted, we were currently on the second floor, and the windows were on the fourth.  Once that idea fizzled, we moved on to something more serious.  We asked to use the neighbor’s phone who had the puppy.  In fact, she even had the Landlords cell and home phone numbers.  Not like it mattered, both numbers went unanswered, and I have no idea what Aaron’s number was.

Then we thought we could pry open the doors if someone had forgotten to throw the deadbolt.  However, all we have for tools are garden tools.  Well, it was the best we had, so we went into the building and up to my door.  Because the door swung in, it meant that the seam was on the outside, plus it looked as if the deadbolt was thrown.  Maybe we could push the doors in, since they’re just French doors?  I remembered that the unused door was actually nailed shut, and as much fun as repairing that sounds, along with possibly breaking the stained glass windows from the force, we decided against that.  However, we still had the other door down at the garage.  Erin manned the front door of the building so I could get back in, and I ran around to the alley and attempted to pry the door open.  This door was the same as our other, it swung in, so it wasn’t possible.  I ran back around and Erin let me in.

Dejected, we headed back to the patio.  I started fumbling around with the door while Erin sat in the shade for a bit.  Both of us were thinking, “WWMD (What would McGuyver do)?”

We looked at the faceplate to the elevator controls, but the screws holding it in weren’t phillips or flathead.  Instead, they were some strange contraption with two holes, definitely used to deter people from tampering with it.  Well, we really didn’t have any other options, so we started looking for tools to try to unscrew the faceplate.

There was this old, rusted, what looked like scissors, but weren’t, things that we were going to use to jimmy the doors open.  It had the two points from the shears, and low and behold it worked like a charm getting the faceplate off.  Once we had the plate off we were faced with 3 live wires running to the plate, one to the key lock and two to the button, and one wire running from the key lock to the button.  As soon as I saw that I figured that the key lock shorts between the one wire and the one running between the lock and the button, and then we’d just have to push the button.

So, Erin holds the faceplate, I short the connection with a spade with a wooden handle, and she pushes the button.

    ZAP ZAP

Erin drops the faceplate, and I drop the spade.  Hmmm, that didn’t seem to work.  It was as if the whole device became electrified when I shorted it.  Hopefully a breaker wasn’t thrown, so we aren’t SOL and can try again once we look it over some more.  I look it over for awhile, and for the life of me can’t see how else this thing can possibly work, other than the way we just did it.

So, we try again like silly monkeys.  This time, we wedge the faceplate into it’s holder so that we have an extra hand free, and we aren’t actually touching it.  Erin uses another spade’s handle to actually push the button this time, instead of doing it with her hand.  We both use frisbees to keep the faceplate from sliding around, instead of using our hands.  And, instead of shorting the connection with the spade, I just take the wire off from one end of the key lock, and touch it to the other end.

SUCCESS!  The elevator started coming up to us.  I kept the circuit shorted until the elevator arrived, since we didn’t want to do that again.  As we were putting everything back together, of course, my hand slips and decides to short out the connection, again.

    ZAP ZAP

That one was definitely a lot worse that the first time, but it’s good to see I have enough salts in my to properly ground a wire.

Thankfully, that time didn’t throw a breaker either.  To have worked all that much only to screw up when putting it all back together.

So, I’m tempted to call my landlord and inform him that the elevator isn’t really all that secure.  I mean, if someone could get on the second floor, and spend the 10-15 minutes it took us to hot wire it, they’re up in our apt no time.  Granted, I don’t’ really have that much faith in humanity that someone of that caliber would take the time, or have the knowhow to pull that off.  But, I’m glad that Erin and I were able to get off the porch.

  • Virgins

Last night Erin and I went and saw The 40 Year-Old Virgin.  I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard at a movie in ages.  After only seeing only a few previews, when Erin said she wanted to see it I was slightly skeptical.  Thinking I was in for another film like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, I went in not sure what to expect.  However, Rotten Tomatoes had such a high score for it, so that helped a little.

I’m not sure if it was just Steve Carell’s (as Andy Stitzer) believably awesome performance, or the way that the rest of the cast just worked, but wow, talk about a good film.  From what I’ve heard, many of the scene’s had lines, but the director actually told the actors just to do whatever felt naturally.  There are definitely times where this came out.  Most notably is when Andy gets his chest waxed.  Apparently this was the first time that Carell had ever had this done.  The hilarity of the scene was that all of the other actors in the room were laughing to almost tears just like all of us in the audience.

Both Erin and I walked out reciting lines from the movie, and I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.  Just go see it, it’s that good.

  • Blueberry Fest

This weekend I headed up with Erin to her grandma’s cottage up near South Haven.  It was the blueberry festival, so there were tons more people than normal and ever.  We saw the Classic Rock All-Stars Saturday night, and then went blueberry picking Sunday morning.  We probably picked around 10 lbs between the four of us, and since it was the end of the season, they gave them to us for free (as opposed to the $0.90/lb they normally charge).  Unfortunately, I left my bag at Erin’s apt this morning, so I’m not sure when I’ll get them back.  I was hoping to freeze them with dry ice (ala Good Eats), to use them throughout the year.

  • First Day

Well, today is my “first day” at the new job.  Actually, it’s the first day not being a contractor.  Today has been a fun day of orientations, skills assessments, and other fun first day things.  Tomorrow will be some more of the same too with another orientation.

It feels good to be “grounded” again somewhere.  I new it was going to happen sooner or later, but now that I have full benefits and the like again, a part of me can give a sigh of relief.  However, it doesn’t feel like anything new, as I’m still on the same project and today is just another day.

  • Salaried?

As some of you may or may not know, I’m currently working as a contractor.  This means I’m hourly, with essentially no benefits.  While this is nice, having luxuries such as health care, paid vacation, etc are even nicer.  The good news is that I was offered a fulltime position last Friday.  After some negotiation talks, I will hear back from them tomorrow.  Hopefully everything goes well.

    **Update as of 7/27**

I have accepted the offer.  The hire on date is tenatively set for next week.  Yay!

  • Sandwich

Today at lunch a coworker and I went to the 7th floor of Marshall Field’s and had lunch.  I must say, my New York Steak Sandwich with mushrooms and carmelized onions was mighty tasty.  That is definitely one of the nice things about working downtown, you can always get good food for lunch.

  • New Desk

I finally received the desk I had been pining over for the last few years.  I ordered it back around the beginning of June, I got a call from USF Holland yesterday, and I took delivery of the desk today.  Since I know you’re all wondering what kind it is, I suppose I’ll clue you in.  It’s a Herman Miller Eames Desk Unit.  I don’t remember how I stumbled upon this little gem, but ever since I did, I’ve wanted one.

Getting it up to the apt wasn’t that bad either.  I had already removed it from the packaging (lots of cardboard on a pallet), and then Aaron and I brought it up in the elevator.  Before the receptionist at USF Holland told me how much it weighed, I thought that there wouldn’t be a problem moving it around.  But at 165 lbs, it’s quite heavy.  Oh well, it’s not like it’ll be moving any time soon.

Now, to get a chair.  At work we have Aeron chairs, and I enjoy them quite a bit.  But my Aunt, who’s in the know on these things, says that Haworth x99’s are way better.  Unfortunately I can’t find a price on them online anywhere.  Oh well, I’ll just have to contact her and find out if she can help me out.

  • Interesting Weekend (I’m a Moron)

This weekend was all over the place.  It all began, Friday night, with me leaving Erin’s wallet in the cab to her friends place.  It and her cellphone were in my pocket.  Needless to say, when we got out, I had the cellphone, but not the wallet.  But wait, it gets better.  Then, on the return trip back to my place, the cellphone must have fallen out too!  Good to see I’m two for two.

Needless to say, the weekend revolved quite heavily around these two events.

Both times we lost something, we called the cab company, at least we think we called the right cab company.  It’s not really something you look at, let alone the cab number, unless something about the ride makes you think about it.  Needless to say, ride home, I got the cab number, just because I was thinking about it from earlier.  After calling the cab company about the cell phone, I repeatedly tried to call it, hoping someone may pick it up.  Well, someone did pick it up, but it was just to turn it off.

Hopefully that means that it’s at the lost and found of the cab company.  The only downside, at the time, was that the lost and found of the cab company we thought it was, is only open Monday – Friday.

Saturday consisted of cancelling all her credit cards, disconnecting her phone, and, you guessed it, sitting in line for 2.5 hours at the DMV.  Wow, I can tell you guys are incredibly jealous.

Unfortunately, this could not have come at a worse time for Erin, since she is incredibly stressed because of school.  Adding this on top of that, I think, is bringing her very close to her breaking point.

I just feel like such a moron for doing this to her.  Needless to say, there was alcohol involved Friday night.  But, on the up side, we had a good time at her friends place.

  • UPS

Lately Aaron and I have bought a lot of things for the apt and stuff, and since we’re geeks, they have mostly been online.  Not that that is a problem or anything, but shipping has given us nightmares (him more than me).  Thankfully I haven’t had nearly the headaches that he has (Aaron, if you’re reading this, you really need to write an entry about your tales).  Also, it just seems to happen with one shipper, UPS.

Well, anyways, I had multiple things shipped to my apt.  Oil and oil filter, fuel filter system, and xbox wireless controllers.  I never got a tracking number from any of the above, so I waited patiently.  Never was a tag put on our door for me.  Instead, Aaron got one, so he had stuff redirected to my office (changed the name to me, so the receptionist would know who they’re for).  Turns out that they just lumped both of our stuff on the same delivery notification, since my oil and fuel stuff got sent there too.  Not a big deal, but strange.

Now, I haven’t received my wireless controllers yet, so I sent the company an email.  They told me that they were being returned, since it had sat at the UPS office for 7 or so days.  Thankfully they are nice, and are sending me two more via USPS to my office.  As you can see from the screenshot of UPS’s website, apparently I called in, not once, but twice.  I wonder who this person was, but it definitely wasn’t me.

Oh well, I guess it’s all worked out now, but I’m definitely sending everything to the office from now on.  That’s for sure

  • NeoCon

Ever since I moved to my new apt, I’ve walked by the Merchandise Mart and have seen the flyer’s for NeoCon.  Now, at the time I didn’t really know what NeoCon actually was, but it was going to be in the same building as LuxeHome, so I was excited.

Well, of course, I remembered, yesterday.  Actually, I didn’t so much as remember, as I saw the Herman Miller, Steelcase, etc trucks sitting outside the Merchandise Mart.  So, I hit up the website last night only to find out that you have to pay to visit it.  That’s really unfortunate, because I wish I would’ve gone and snapped a few pictures to share.

I guess I’ll just have to keep visiting Inhabitat instead, sigh.
